Delaware crime: No arrests in rape cases; public told to 'remain alert'
No arrests have been
made in any of the four rapes that occurred since the beginning of the month in
New Castle County and Wilmington, police said Wednesday.
Two women were abducted
at gunpoint and raped by the same man in separate incidents in the Stanton area
June 2 and 5, police say.
"The investigation is
still ongoing," said state police Sgt. Walter Newton. "Fortunately, we haven't
had any more sexual assaults reported, but we are still reminding the public to
remain alert about their surroundings."
They don't know if he
left the area because they don't know who he is, police said.
In addition to the Police reminders to stay alert you should carry some type of personal alarm, pepper spray or other types of self defense products with you. We can help you if you have any questions.
With all of the snow we have gotten on the East Coast this winter, everyone is geared up to get back outside. I would guess that a few of us (me included) have put on a few pounds because of being couped up inside. I know that I have been a slacker this winter with my exercise regime. I can't wait to get back outside in the fresh air.
I have already started seeing an increase in the amount of people going to parks jogging or walking their dogs. I would like to remind everyone to stay vigilent when it comes to safety. Don't forget to stay alert and be smart when going through your daily routine. Don't forget to grab your pepper spray or stun gun before heading out to the park. Check each of these items to make sure they are still working properly. Maybe you have had the pepper spray for a while and it has expired or the batteries in your stun gun have gone dead.
Make it a daily habit of carrying your self defense products with you every day. The bad guys prey on the unsuspecting. They know what they want to do - you don't. Always stay alert and trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right - trust this feeling. Look around. If you see someone walking towards you and you feel uncomfortable, cross the street if possible. Make eye contact to let that person know you see them. Walk briskly, but with confidence and if you have your self defense product on you, have your hand on it and be willing to use it if necessary.
Enjoy the outdoors and getting back to your normal routine. Just do it safely!
Crime does exist and you do have the right to protect yourself. Stun Guns are an effective and very affordable self defense tool you carry with you to provide you excellent knockdown power when you need it most. When the assailant attempts to get his hands on you simply give him the surprise (I mean "shock") of his life. A Stun Master Stun Gun can give you the peace of mind you need to go about your daily life without fear.
Wherever you are on the street, in an office building or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or cab, stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings. Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uncomfortable, avoid the person or leave. Know the neighborhoods where you live and work. Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals, and restaurants, or stores that are open late.
On Foot-Day or Night
Stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots, or alleys. Don't flash money or other tempting targets like jewelry or clothing. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket, not a back pocket. Carry only what is necessary, and try not to keep currency and credit cards all in one place. Don't wear shoes or clothing that restrict your movements. Have your car or house key in hand before you reach the door. Try to use automated teller machines in the daytime. Have your card in hand and don't approach the machine if you're uneasy about people nearby. Better yet, only use the ATM machines inside of grocery store, malls, or gas stations.
If you think someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store, restaurant, or lighted house. If someone harasses you, don't be embarrassed. Loudly say, "Leave me alone! Someone call the police! Get away!"
Vehicle Safety
Keep your car in good running condition. Make sure there's enough gas to get where you're going and back. Always roll up the windows and lock car doors, even if you're coming right back. Check inside and out before getting in. Avoid parking in isolated areas. Be especially alert in lots and underground parking garages. If you think someone is following you, don't head home. Drive to the nearest police or fire station, gas station, or other open business to get help.
If someone tries to rob you:
Don’t resist. Give up your property. Don't risk your life. Report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent others from being victims.
Take a Stand!
Make your neighborhood and working place safer by reporting broken street lights, cleaning up parks and vacant lots, and lobbying local government for better lighting in public places. Initiate a block watch program in your neighborhood by contacting your local crime prevention unit.
